The Navy’s largest Defense Fuel Support Point (DFSP) in the continental United States is located near Norfolk, VA. There are three fuel terminals that provide centralized regional support/management of Navy petroleum, oil, and lubricants services. The primary terminal is located in Portsmouth, Va. on Craney Island. Other terminals are located on Naval Station Norfolk, Va. and in Yorktown, Va.
Craney Island provides fuel, and related service to approximately 256 fleet and industrial customers with an average throughput of 15 million barrels of fuel per year. Facilities include 60 storage tanks and over 100 miles of pipeline that store and transport jet fuel, aviation turbine fuel, diesel fuel, lube oil, reclaimed fuel oil.
A Highland Tank Model R-HTC-20,000 UL-SU 2215 Aboveground Oil/Water Separators was recently installed pier side at Craney Island to treat oily wastewater off-loaded from ships before it is discharged to a sanitary sewer without additional pretreatment. The use of an oil/water separator for pier side applications helps this shoreline facilities meet pretreatment standards for discharges of wastewater into a sanitary sewer. In addition, this treatment process helps this facility meet the requirements of waste reduction under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
