Stormwater ponds are one of the most common urban rainwater runoff BMPs thanks to their reliability and predictability, but performance is design and maintenance dependent. Join Shahram (Shane) Missaghi of the University of Minnesota to explore stormwater pond design, operation and maintenance presented in an integrated stormwater pond management plan that effectively manages your stormwater and protects the water quality of your natural resources.
Stormwater ponds — constructed ponds designed to capture rainwater runoff from impervious areas and provide water quality treatment and rate control — are an integral part of our urban stormwater management systems. Stormwater ponds offer important features, functions, and benefits as well as a reliable and predictable element to our stormwater systems, and are an important element in any treatment system, low impact development, or a green infrastructure. Yet, despite their reliability, predictability, and commonality as an urban rainwater runoff BMP, without the proper design and maintenance, performance will suffer.
This webinar addresses discusses the different types of stormwater ponds, their purpose (with a focus on water quality ponds), and how they address the three main challenges created by stormwater runoff. Missaghi will address each essential design and maintenance element, as well as the operation, maintenance, and sediment management of stormwater ponds.
Additionally, as living with ponds includes natural issues such as wild life, weed management, and safety considerations, we will provide real-world tested and successful techniques addressing these challenges. Finally, this webinar will explore the main components and the implementation of successful stormwater pond management, rules, and regulations.
Learning Objectives
Webinar attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.
- Understanding of the issues created by stormwater runoff, and how the feature, function, and the benefits of stormwater ponds can address these challenges
- Understanding of the essential elements required in stormwater pond design, operation, and maintenance
- Understanding of how to address the top five challenges in living with stormwater ponds
- Understanding of how stormwater ponds fit into the Minimum Control Measures part of the NPDES permit (MS4s)
- Understanding of the main components of a successful stormwater pond management (e.g., inventory, assessment, and implementations, etc.)
* Webinar presentations are scheduled for approximately one hour with a question and answer session to follow. Webinar may exceed scheduled time.
