WaterQuality BMP

Constantly influenced by natural eutrophication, direct human impact, and a changing climate, surface water is a scarce natural resource needing effective protection. Join Shahram (Shane) Missaghi to explore the function and benefits of BMPs in protecting surface water, and examine three key criteria to insure their successful implementation: water, soil, and climate.

Faced with protecting surface water from constant influences, water resource managers – the caretakers of these precious resources – face a series of complex challenges. Fortunately, tools and laws are available to address some of these challenges—particularly, the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in protecting our surface water from runoff.  Join Shahram (Shane) Missaghi of the University of Minnesota to explore our stormwater management and the specific tools to remedy associated issues.

This webinar will start with a close look at the global stresses influencing our surface water resources.  Missaghi will discuss a typical stormwater system with its conduits and storage areas, and how they are impacted by the excessive runoff at various points and levels within the watershed.  We will define and explain the function and benefits of a series of stormwater BMPs that are used to protect our natural resources.  Additionally, we will focus on the three key criteria to insure their successful implementation: water, soil, and climate.

In targeting the specific issues, we will first look how our solutions fit into the greater picture: “where does that water on my land come from, and where does it drain to?”  This webinar covers a number of approaches (e.g., watershed, treatment train, low impact development, or smart growth) used in implementing successful stormwater BMPs, as well as a discussion on how to counter over-reliance on any one BMP.
